Curriculum Intent

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all, enables students to foster an appreciation of the diverse world that we live in, and seeks to expand their horizons.

The PSHE curriculum aims to ensure that each of our pupils will know more, remember more and understand more about how to play a positive and successful role within our society, both as a child and as an adult within the future. 

We believe that a well-delivered PSHE curriculum can have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils. Our curriculum aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking in the context of core themes throughout a programme covering PSHE, RSE, Citizenship and Careers Education. 

WE utilise outside agencies where necessary to deliver workshops, facilitate discussions and other sessions that are vital in developing the knowledge, skills and attributes students  need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life after school.

Furthermore, we aim to provide pupils with a core knowledge of their world, locally, nationally and globally and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up within this. We aim to provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.  Moreover, our pupils are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We challenge all of our pupils to look for opportunities to demonstrate our values to work hard, be kind and give no excuses.

Religious Studies at Havant Academy provides students with the tools to critically participate in, and reflect on the dynamics of modern society.  It is neither a core nor a foundation subject; the 1988 Education Act states that ‘Religious Education has equal standing in relation to core subjects of the National Curriculum in that it is compulsory for all registered pupils’. 

Havant Academy aims to develop students’ core and facilitating knowledge of world religions and religious practices, whilst enabling them to explore and question philosophical and ethical viewpoints.

Religious Studies develops students with fundamental transferable skills of evaluation, analysis, communication, critical thinking and critical judgement. It helps students be open minded, to identify and challenge misconceptions and prejudice and understand how to tolerate and be kind to one another. To listen to each other and not be afraid of making their own voice heard, justifying their viewpoints with reasoned consideration. 

Students are encouraged to be critical thinkers who develop their knowledge and understanding through reading and comprehension of religious texts and philosophical theory. 

We want students to be inspired by Religious Studies, becoming well rounded citizens, motivated to make a positive difference in the lives of those around them, with the confidence to be courageous advocates for those who suffer injustice and discrimination.
